The line between fine art and illustrative decoration can be difficult to discern. Some murals may seem more like public service ads or sentiment-inducing eye candy. Read Lauren Silverman's "On Philly's Walls, Murals Painted With Brotherly Love" on NPR's site and view the photos of Philadelphia murals. Is the funding and planning process involved in making a public mural devised to "sanitize" fine art? What do you think?
Ann Northrup is a well-known and respected area painter and teacher who has completed a number of murals in Philadelphia. Below is a picture of her mural "A Taste of Summer," shown in Silverman's article. This picture, however, is a view of the mural while in was still in progress, posted by mural painter Kim Senior in February of 2009 on her "Art Murals Paint" blog.
